What is Photobiomodulation, and why does it matter to you?

Updated: Nov 17, 2024

Photobiomodulation (PBM), also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or red light therapy, has been gaining attention in recent years for its potential to provide non-invasive pain relief and promote tissue repair. A recent study published in the Journal of Photomedicine and Laser Surgery (1) explores the effects of PBM on pain and inflammation, shedding light on its potential benefits.

Pain Relief:

According to the study, PBM has been shown to reduce pain and inflammation in various conditions, including osteoarthritis, tendinitis, and neuropathic pain (1). The authors suggest that PBM's analgesic effects may be attributed to its ability to increase ATP production, reduce oxidative stress, and modulate inflammatory cytokines (1).

Tissue Repair:

PBM has also been found to enhance tissue repair by increasing collagen synthesis, promoting angiogenesis, and improving wound healing outcomes (2, 3). The study highlights the potential of PBM to accelerate recovery in various clinical settings, including sports medicine and surgical recovery (1).

Mechanisms of Action:

The exact mechanisms of PBM's effects are not fully understood but are thought to involve the activation of cellular pathways, including the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway, which promotes cell survival and proliferation (4).

Conclusion:

While more research is needed to fully understand the effects of PBM, the existing evidence suggests that it may be a valuable adjunctive therapy for pain relief and tissue repair. As with any medical treatment, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional before using PBM.
